José’s first experience of coffee started during his school days where he helped out on his family’s coffee farm back in Venezuela. José graduated from university with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering but soon after moving to the UK in 2001, he took up a role in the wine industry and trained as a wine taster under the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET). José’s desire has always been to work in coffee and he joined Mercanta in 2006 where he has further developed and broadened his extensive cupping abilities and served on COE juries in Bolivia, Guatemala, Colombia and El Salvador. He has also taught the ‘Introduction to Cupping’ course at the London School of Coffee. José’s time is now divided between running the cupping analysis across all our many origins and also instructing the shipment inbound coffees to our warehouse facilities in the UK and USA.
