Amazonas Organic is produced by an association of smallholder farmers from the province of Rodríguez de Mendoza, in the Amazonas department of northern Peru. This mountainous region has been growing coffee for over 50 years and, with some 430 hectares now under coffee, it is the province’s main cash crop.

The farmers that produced this lot are all members of ‘Aprocafes’ - ‘Association of producers of specialty and sustainable coffees’. This association aims to unite and support individual producers from the region, while encouraging a culture of quality among its members.
Farms in Rodríguez de Mendoza are small and traditional - averaging around five hectares in size, with some two hectares usually planted out with coffee (Typica, Catimor and Caturra varietals are found in the area). The farmer and his family usually carry out most of the work on the farm themselves, apart from during harvest - which typically runs from May until August - when the farmer will take on some seasonal workers to help with the picking.

The cherries are selectively hand-picked and fully washed, usually at the farm’s own small wet mill. The beans are then either sun-dried on screens or, during rainy periods (which are frequent!) on raised screens inside a ‘solar dryer ‘. This is a simple yet ingenius greenhouse-like structure that works by ciculating hot, dry air around the moist beans; the air inside the dryer is heated by the sun, and is kept circulating because of the difference in temperature between the inside and outside of the dryer – the hot air rises out of the openings near the roof and is replaced by cold air entering via the openings near the ground.

This coffee is grown without the use of Chemicals pesticides or fertilizers and is fully organic certified.
