Juana Mamani Organic
This coffee is packed in jute sacks lined with PVC Grainpro bags – an airtight storage system that preserves aroma and freshness for longer, while also allowing the coffee to breathe naturally.
Juana Mamani bought her coffee farm when she was just 16 years old, after working nearby on her sister’s farm for 5 years to save enough to buy a plot. She went on to win 2nd place in Bolivia’s Cup of Excellence 2007 - aged just 23 years old - with a score of 90.78.
Juana’s farm lies at between 1,500 - 1,800 metres above sea level on the lush hillsides around the Carrasco La Reserva area - some 162km north-east of La Paz in Bolivia’s semi-tropical Caranavi region. Her land extends over a total of six hectares - when Juana bought it there were two hectares of coffee already planted, which she has since expanded to five hectares planting new Typica and Caturra trees.
When she first started farming Juana sold her coffee as semi-processed wet parchment to the local market. She then began to selectively pick her coffee and dry it herself on her farm using drying tables, meaning she could start selling directly to the specialty market for a much better price.
The coffee is fully organic certified and grows in the shade of native forest trees. Peak harvest on the farm runs from June to September, when Juana’s family help her with the picking and processing.
Inspired by her current farm’s success, Juana has recently bought a second 10 hectare farm, with 1 hectare planted out with coffee, in the same area. She has since added 2 new hectares of coffee trees and hopes to expand further in the future. We’re very much looking forward to tasting what this new farm can produce!
