La Candelilla Tarrazú 100% Geisha – El Quemado Lot
Finca La Candelilla is high in the Talamanca mountains in the heart of Costa Rica’s Tarrazú region, one of Costa Rica’s best known and most traditional growing areas. The farm lies at around 1,750m in the village of La Sábana on the south bank of the river Pirrís, a few kilometres west of the centre of San Marcos de Tarrazú. La Candelilla was founded over a century ago by Victor Mora, one of the original settlers of the Los Santos region, and was one of the first coffee plantations in the Tarrazú.
In 2000, La Candelilla’s current owners, Rafael Sánchez and his wife, Lucia, built what was then one of the first micro mills in Costa Rica. Before this, the farm had no option but to deliver the coffee cherries to a local cooperative, where its harvest was bulked together with cherries from other farms and so lost in a vast commercial regional blend. The construction of the micro mill has allowed La Candelilla to pulp and mill its own coffee and so protect both the quality and traceability of its exceptional coffee. The mill has also given the farm the freedom to develop experimental lots such as the rare and unique Geisha varietal.
The Geisha plantation has been carefully planted in the El Quemado plot, in the very highest part of the farm, and the result is outstanding, bringing to the cup an intense and elegant acidity with distinct floral and citrus notes.
La Candelilla’s owners are committed to good environmental practice in all of the coffee processes, while always aiming to maintain and improve quality.
