Brazil new crop hits our warehouse…and Monte Alegre in flower
Brazil’s 2010 harvest is here! We’re very excited that the first of the new crop has already arrived at our UK warehouse and yet more coffees are on their way to both the UK and Mercanta North America.
Recent arrivals to our UK warehouse (for deliveries worldwide exc. North America) include the London BSCA Fazenda Capim Branco natural (available outside the UK only), BSCA Fazenda Sao Silvestre pulped natural and the ever popular BSCA Espresso Blend No. 1. More Minas Gerais coffees will be coming in stock in both the UK and USA over the next few weeks, and our Bahia coffees will be arriving from December.
Back in Brazil farmers are already thinking ahead to next year’s harvest – which begins with the flowering. We recently received some beautiful photos from José Francisco Pereira at Fazenda Monte Alegre, in the heart of Minas Gerais coffee country, showing the flowering on his farm. The photos show three variations:
1) Heavy Flowering: On the new coffee trees, pruned coffee trees and coffee trees that did not produce in 2010.
2) Light Flowering (only the top of the trees): On the coffee trees that produced high volumes of coffee in 2010 and were stressed.
3) No Flowering: On over stressed coffee trees.
The flowering generally last three days and, as well as being a spectacular sight, is an important indication of the potential of the coming crop.
